How to Replace a Kitchen Faucet

CCO/kaboompics/Pixabay

Kitchen faucets are probably one of the most used fixtures in homes. Many times a day the water is turned on and off, leading to quite a bit of wear and tear on this hardworking fixture. If your faucet has seen better days, or is out of style, you can replace it with a shiny new version using just a few tools. Exchanging your old kitchen faucet with a new one can transform the look and functionality of your kitchen in just a couple of hours.

Tools you'll Need

Have all the necessary tools for this DIY project lined up before you start to save yourself time and frustration.

  • New Faucet
  • Channel locking pliers
  • Basin wrench
  • Plumber's Putty
  • Adjustable Wrench
  • Flexible supply lines
  • Tape Measure

Before Starting

Turn off the hot and cold water shut-off valves. they're usually located in the cabinet that's under the sink. Then open up the faucet to relieve pressure.

Removing the Old Faucet

  • Step One: Using an adjustable wrench and a pair of channel locking pliers, disconnect both the water lines from the faucet. If the supply lines are old, or the gaskets are worn out, you may want to replace them with flexible supply lines.
  • Step Two: Using a socket wrench or basin wrench remove the nut that is holding the faucet tailpiece assembly in place. Sometimes it's difficult to loosen old faucet nuts, in that case try soaking the threads with penetrating oil and try again.
  • Step Three: If your sink has a line that connects the hose to the faucet you can disconnect this.
  • Step Four: Pull the old faucet out and clean the sink's surface making sure to remove any rust or caked on debris.

Installing the New Faucet

  • Step One: Using the measuring tape, measure the distance, from center to center, of the outside holes of your sink. This is to make sure the new faucet will fit. Since all faucets are slightly different, read any installation instructions that come with your new faucet. Follow all manufacturer's pre-assembly instructions and place the optional flange over the faucet opening.
  • Step Two: Seal the new faucet. If you're using a gasket, place the gasket on the lip of the plate and thread the hoses through. If using plumber's putty, apply it around the base of the faucet and set the faucet in place.
  • Step Three: Under the sink you can now thread on the flange and nut using a socket or basin wrench.
  • Step Four: If you're using pull-out faucets, a weight needs to be added that will retract the pull-out spray.
  • Step Five: Now it's time to attach the supply lines to the faucet and then to the shut-off valves. Cold water connects on the right and hot water on the left.
  • Step Six: Turn on the water and check for leaking. If you find any leaks you'll need to tighten the connections on the water supply line.

Style Guides

Get the Look: Vintage Chic

Posted by Nicky Kingston in Style Guides | 4 months ago 7 min read

Giving a new twist to a classic style, our resident Stylist shows you how to get the "Vintage Chic" look in your bathroom.

Even in these modern times, traditional bathrooms remain incredibly popular—and with good reason. Thanks to a combination of luxurious detailing and expert craftsmanship, vintage style products have enduring appeal.

When you think of traditional bathroom suites, there are certain elements that immediately spring to mind, like ornate toilets with high level cisterns and chain pull flushes, elegant roll top baths with telephone style shower handsets and monochrome tiles. However, if traditional is a little too run-of-the-mill for your tastes, it may be time to view this style from a different angle.

In my latest style guide, I'll show you how to create a traditional bathroom with a twist. It's a style we're calling "Vintage Chic".

What is Vintage Chic?

Influenced by a renewed interest in classical styles, "Vintage Chic" is a repurposing of the vintage look, taking elements of Victorian and Edwardian interior design and placing them in a darker, more theatrical setting, which is where the idea of "chic" comes into play.

This style allows for a mix of both old and new furniture but set within a vintage style decor that utilises deeper, richer colours. Hints of light and metallics are used to break up what could be an overbearing backdrop, whilst surfaces with a slightly more weathered appearance, be it countertops or skirting boards, help set the tone.

As artist Henri Matisse famously said "Creativity takes courage", and you will certainly need to be both brave and bold to try this interior style. But with the right product choices and a well-chosen colour scheme, you can easily create a timeless classic of your own.

Vintage Chic mood board

To begin your vintage chic bathroom project, it's always a great idea to create a good old-fashioned mood board, to give a flavour of the type of thing you're trying to achieve. It's one of the best ways to find inspiration, and quickly demonstrates which elements work well together. We've created one here, but you can easily make your own by cutting out inspirational images from home magazines, adding fabric or wallpaper swatches, or printing off and sticking images from the Victoria Plum bathroom ideas section.

Choosing colours

Colour is a very important aspect of the Vintage Chic style, with dark coloured walls and floors providing the perfect back drop to your bathroom design. Whilst monochrome is very popular when it comes to traditional bathrooms, dark blues, deep purples, and rich burgundies can all play their part in being the basis upon which you build the rest of your decor. Secondary colours, which can add a touch of light to the dark, can include sage, teal, cream, ivory and bone. A black and white checkerboard floor can add a sense of drama.

Vintage textures

As previously mentioned, rough-hewn and weathered surfaces add authenticity to this vintage style. Worn wood, crumpled curtains or even aged metallic elements can all bring this style to life. Wallpaper is something that only became widely available in the Victorian era, so you can stay faithful to the period by using it. Look for darker colours with a damask pattern or flocked velvet texture, or use dark metro tiles to add depth to your design.

Setting the scene

When it comes to placing your products, be prepared to be more theatrical with your setting. If you have the floor space to play with, a roll top tub, like the Dulwich black roll top bath from The Bath Co., should take centre stage and will make a luxurious addition.

If your bathroom is more compact, we also stock straight baths which fit in sympathetically with traditional designs, plus traditional style shower sets, so size certainly shouldn't restrict your creativity.

When choosing your ceramics, look for a high level toilet to keep in with the vintage theme, along with ornate pedestal basins, washstands, and accessorise with cross handle taps.

Inspired accessories

To give your Vintage Chic bathroom an even more dramatic, theatrical setting, add a large framed feature mirror or paintings with dark surrounds. If you have chosen a roll top bath, place a chandelier directly overhead to make an even more glamorous spectacle of your new tub. However, do make sure this is a specialist bathroom light suitable for zone 2 and above.

Handy hint: Check out our bathroom electrical safety guide before choosing lighting.

Vintage Chic bathroom products

This bathroom includes the following products:

Classic black roll top tub

What could be more dramatic than your very own freestanding bath? Taking centre stage, the Dulwich black roll top bath is the very epitome of luxury living, but with its black surround, it takes on a darker, more mysterious appearance.

The Bath Co. Dulwich traditional double ended black roll top bath with ball feet 1695 x 740

Authentic high level toilet

Staying true to the period style, the Camberley high level toilet comes with a traditional chain pull flush, ornate brackets, upon which the cistern is mounted, and your choice of white or black wooden seats. If you have low ceilings, the flush pipe can be cut to size to suit your room.

The Bath Co. Camberley high level toilet with wooden soft close seat

Beautiful basin

They say you shouldn't put anything up on a pedestal, but with the fabulous Camberley basin, we'll make an exception! Featuring bevelled edges and a traditional surround that helps protect your wall, this version comes with 2 tap holes, so you can accessorise with traditional pillar taps.

The Bath Co. Camberley 2 tap hole full pedestal basin

Although not featured in our Vintage Chic bathroom, the Camberley grey vanity unit is the perfect way to add both style and storage to your overall design. Featuring stunning panel detailing and plenty of room for toiletries, towels and more, it's a great choice that'll save your space from clutter.

Vintage Chic in a smaller bathroom

Of course, the bathroom I created above isn't truly representative of the average British bathroom, both in terms of size and layout. However, you can still create your own Vintage Chic retreat in a smaller space.

Vintage Chic in an average-sized bathroom

Whilst it may require a little bit of creativity when planning your layout, the end result will certainly be worth it. If you're really struggling for space, you'll find smaller versions of some the products featured above.

Overhead view of Vintage Chic in an average-sized bathroom

Of course, a luxurious freestanding bath isn't for everyone. If your household is like mine, you'll need to cater to the needs of a range of family members. From a quick morning shower to a relaxing soak in the evening, you can still enjoy a family bathroom that's full of Vintage Chic.

Vintage Chic family bathroom

Simply swap the freestanding bath for a roll top style shower bath and fit a traditional style mixer shower, plus a close coupled toilet, for a functional family space that's full of flair.

Bathroom Exhaust Fan With Heater And Humidity Sensor

Bathroom Exhaust Fan With Heater And Humidity Sensor

Bathroom Ventilation Fan

Control moisture in your bathroom with a ventilation fan and learn the specifics of installing a fan in a main-level bathroom.

Your home improvement questions, answered by professionals from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), an association of remodeling professionals committed to providing consumers with high standards of quality, honesty, integrity, and responsibility.

Can I add a ventilation fan to my main-level bath if I also have an upper level? How does it vent?

Many older homes were built without exhaust fans, requiring a window to be open to ensure ventilation. This is still allowed by our building codes, but in today's homes, it is preferable to install a proper-sized exhaust fan.

Many homeowners don't realize that as we improve our homes' insulation and reduce energy-wasting air leakage, our homes become even more dependent on mechanical ventilation.

This is especially true in bathrooms because of the abundance of moisture in the air from bathing and showering. As we improve our home's ability to be more energy efficient, the trapped moisture can cause everything from cosmetic wall and ceiling damage to more serious mold issues.

You might want to have a professional inspect your bathroom to see if there is a possibility of a hidden wall or ceiling pathway for air ducting that could lead to the roof. Many homes will have pathways built in for heating and cooling ductwork.

If there is no convenient way to vent your new fan up through the roof, you will need to have the fan vent through the bathroom's outside wall. Many of today's fans can be installed in either the ceiling or wall. How your home is constructed will determine if the fan can be in the ceiling or if it needs to be in the wall.

Installing the fan in a new location, especially penetrating an exterior wall, should always be handled by a professional. I would suggest either a licensed professional remodeler or an HVAC contractor. Creating a water-tight wall penetration and installing the necessary electrical connections need to be done just right to avoid serious repercussions.

Your installer should be able to provide a fan that will be sized properly for your bathroom. Keep in mind that bath fans can be noisy. All exhaust fans are rated for sound. They will have a numerical scone rating. Typically a rating of less than 2 is considered quiet. Many exhaust fans have much higher ratings and create much more noise. A noisy fan will be irritating and a constant reminder that someone didn't pay attention to this last important detail.

Renew Bathroom Sink

Renew Bathroom Sink

sink 3

There are many people who hardly make improvements in their house, due to the heavy financial outlay that this entails or to the hustle and bustle of the works themselves. However, this is no excuse, since it is possible to renew the decoration of a certain area of the house, in an efficient and economical way.

The sink area is one of the parts of the home that is least renewed despite being one of the most used on a daily basis. The sink is essential that it always looks good and from the feeling that it is always clean and sparkling at the same time. In the following article we give you a series of tips that will help you to renew the bathroom sink and make it look like a different one.

Painting the bathroom wall

One way to renovate the bathroom sink is to paint the wall where the sink is located. A simple color change can make the sink look like a totally different one and add a decorative touch to the entire bathroom. The paint that is going to be used must be a special one for the bathroom since it is a room in which the humidity is quite high. It is therefore important to choose paint that is of high quality and prevent it from deteriorating over time.

Paint the tiles

Another way to give a new air to the sink is to paint the tiles in that room of the house. Therefore, it is not necessary to paint the walls, since applying another type of color to the tiles helps to change the visual appearance of the sink and give it a totally new look. It is important that before applying the paint, a good sanding of the tiles is carried out.

Sanding the surface is key, when the paint adheres without any problem to the aforementioned tiles. After you finish painting the tiles, it is good to carefully clean the joints of said tiles so that the final finish is the best possible.

washbasin

Put stickers on the tiles

If you see that it is too confusing to paint the wall or the tiles, you can choose to put stickers on the tiles. It is a much cheaper and easier way to renew your bathroom sink. In the market you can find a multitude of models of all kinds of shapes and shades.

The important thing is to choose those adhesive tiles that complement perfectly with the rest of the bathroom. The first thing you should do before placing the adhesives is to clean all the tiles so that these adhesives stick without any problem. The result is usually quite good, making the area in question look like a totally different one.

sink 1

Using vinyl-type wallpaper

In recent years the use of wallpaper has become very fashionable, when decorating the different rooms of a house. The big difference with painting is that the wallpaper brings more modernity to the decoration and gives a feeling of dynamism in the whole place.

In the case of the bathroom, experts advise the use of a wallpaper that is vinyl, since it is a material that withstands humidity quite well and is quite simple and easy to clean. The wallpaper is ideal when it comes to achieving a total renovation of the sink area and a certain modernity to the entire bathroom.

Put new furniture

If you don't feel like painting because you think it's too cumbersome, you can always choose to put some new furniture in the area and get a major visual change. There are a multitude of accessories on the market that can make your sink look like a totally different one from before. From a simple mirror to a functional shelf on which to place bathroom accessories, anything goes as long as they combine perfectly with the rest of the room. A simple and effective way to give a new look to your bathroom sink.

sink 2

In short, it is not complicated at all to renovate the sink area as long as you have clear ideas and know what to do. Many people hardly give importance to this area of the bathroom despite being used a lot on a daily basis. As you can see, it is not necessary to do major renovations when it comes to giving the sink another look. A good coat of paint either on the wall or on the tiles themselves will help you make the sink look different and like new. Apart from the painting, adding new furniture is also a great idea to renew the image of the washbasin.
